The Memory Itself

...IS PRETTY FULL OF HEADCANON. This memory is pretty much just a montage of Van being eleven and very desperately trying to be a Good Big Brother for his little sister...Which involves learning how to deal with diapers, fussy crying, messy attempts to get baby to actually eat food, fussy crying, vomiting and other unpleasant baby fluids, fussy crying, sudden high temperature for SEEMINGLY NO REASON and resulting panic, and fussy crying at three in the morning. Basically all that fun stuff babies are fond of doing.

...Presumably at some point an adult is there to help him (evidence for this: Tear survived to be 16) but he's pretty insistent on being Tear's Big Brother and tries to handle as much of it as he can on his own. Except for the parts of the montage where Tear sneezes/vomits/whatever and he goes into a sheer panic because his baby sister is OBVIOUSLY DYING.

In a dramatic finish at the end of the montage, he finally learns that singing lullabies calms Tear down almost every time, and he finally gets to feel like a Good Big Brother.

What Van learns:
♪ BABIES ARE TERRIFYING.
♪ Especially when you're eleven and that baby is your only surviving family.
♪ Babies. They're terrifying.

What this means:

...Van is even better prepared for deage events. He knows how to handle babies and toddlers and such. He knows what the little bastards are up to. He knows what to expect. He knows not to trust them.

He is prepared.

...And I guess he knows how to change a diaper. In...case that ever becomes a thing, that he'd have to deal with...(unsure)
