The Memory Itself

ND2002. The one who would seize glory shall destroy the island of his birth, a land by the name of Hod.

Teodoro -- Van's adoptive grandfather -- ultimately had good intentions as he honestly believed that the Score and the sacrifices made in its name were for the benefit of the world, as highlighted in his discussion with Luke and Tear after the fall of Akzeriuth (to 4:34). In this scene, he's firm about his belief that obeying the Score is the right thing to do, but he's not pointlessly cruel with his scolding.

In Van's memory, he was likely the same. There's no onscreen canon on how exactly it went down, but we can infer from that scene and other knowledge. Tear was too young at the time, but Van was a teenager growing into a man and was rapidly climbing the ranks of the Order. It was time that Van learned an unfortunate truth.

Teodoro called Van to discuss something important and decided, since Van would one day be a watcher, he should be aware of what that entailed -- which involved explaining what happened at Hod.

...Needless to say, Van does not take this well at all and likely starts shouting his grandfather down, accusing him of allowing Hod to fall and letting his mother to die and why didn't he warn anyone? And Teodoro explains that it is to bring prosperity to Auldrant as told in the Score and as a watcher, Van will need to learn the importance of this. Essentially, Van will have to understand that it was a thing of the past and that it is time to look towards the future.

Van makes a declaration of how he doesn't care about the future, how he hates the Score and will never serve it and storms off, pulling only one thing from this conversation: No-one cared about Hod. No-one cared about what happened to him and his mother. No-one cares about what happens because it's all in the name of prosperity.

At this point, Teodoro sighs heavily and hopes that time will help him recover...and then Van never did.

...Most likely there is nothing to imply that Van was adopted in this conversation. Which will color the memory somewhat.

What Van learns
♪ My grandfather is alive...but he shouldn't be after what he allowed to happen.
♪ Hod's destruction was definitely foretold in the Score, which he knew about.
♪ Hod's destruction by his hand was also foretold, which he didn't know about.
♪ Auldrant should burn.

What this means

More reason to have hatred and disdain for everyone else around him, more reason to believe that people would allow him to suffer if they could gain something from it, more reason to believe no-one genuinely cares.

...But also a defeated feeling. He was born as a weapon and used as one. He knew the worst the Score had to offer because of it. And what did he do about that?

He let it happen again.

Disdain, hatred, rage, powerlessness, sorrow and defeat.

Primarily this was prioritized simply because I wanted to have him take it and deal with it sooner rather than later. May as well let him get out all his hate and rage before he gets the really terrible memories.
